Unit 3: Urbanization & Industrialization

Recap: Well There were so many things that I learned about the late 19th century and early 20th century. During this time there were many positives such as new technology and negatives like diseases and such. I learned that during this time there were many job opportunities in companies causing people to move to cities. During this time nations such as Germany, the United States and France had supplies such as coal, and iron. ALso Germany and United states became powerful Industrial producers. There were many inventors during this time such as Thomas Edison who invented the light bulb in 1870. There were also chemist who made chemicals related to health and hygiene. During the Urbanization period things were also interesting. In this period of time the population increased and the death rate fell. Hospitals were dirty and filthy places. Later on surgeons surgeons began washing hands before surgery. In the urban life people who lived in the slums which were small cramped row houses, people lived here because they couldn't afford anything else. People living in these slums drank alcohol and crime increased because it was a way for them to get away. Later on relief programs were set up to help the people. In this unit we watched a movie which is a musical named Oliver Twist. This movie was a perfect example of how urban life was in the late 19th/early 20th century. It showed how if you were poor your life was basically a living hell. People treated you bad just because of the fact that you were poor.

Revisit & Reflect:
I personally don't really enjoy living in cities because I don't really like the fact that there's so many people. I also can't stand living so near a people like in apartments. Even though I don't like living in the city so much, if I had to pick a city to live in I would probably pick Paris. Paris has always interested me because I just enjoy to see what a pretty city it is. It has so many historical sites such as The Louvre which is a museum that has so many magnificent sculptures and famous paintings like the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinchi. There are also many restaurants in France that I would love to go eat at. Paris just seems amazing because of all the lights. Since I don't enjoy living in the city I would probably still like to live in Paris because I could go and visit the versailles palace and I can enjoy walking on the garden.
