Unit 2: Guns, Germs, and Steel

Recap: In the unit of Guns germs and steel I learned many interesting things. I learned that many people around the world are not as lucky as we are in the United States. In the movie Jared Diamond went to different places around the world. That is when he realized how unfortunate others around the world are. The big question in the movie was, "why you white men have so much cargo and us New Guineans have so little". What i learned about this was that it pretty much has to do with who is faster at conquering. I was thinking of how some countries in Latin America are still undeveloped and countries such as the United States are still very powerful. To me that is a really big question because Latin America as all the resources to become a powerful nation. What I learned from Mrs. Lawson was that I guess it just has to do with who gets ahead.
Revisit: Ethiopia is one the oldest independent countries in Africa. It is mainly known for periodic droughts and famines, and it's long civil conflict and a border war with Eritria. Ethiopia is one of the poorest states in Africa. First part of the 2oth century Ethiopia forged strong links with Britain. Later on the British helped the Ethiopians draw out the Italians. Ethiopia has been an independent country in Africa and the oldest in the world about 2,000 years old. Ethiopia and Eritria went of to war in 1998 and it is still going on today.

Reflect:

Wow Its crazy that a country that's 2,000 years old can be one of the poorest countries in Africa. I believe that it is also sad that Africa has rich resourses such as diamonds and such but they don't have that much water or resources that help you survive! I guess that is why Africa isn't as successful. From all of this research I've learned that I guess what makes a nation succesful just has to do with who is ahead in the game.

  1. Hi Josseline,
This post gets off to a great start and you are on the right track with the research, but it's not quite complete. Make sure you provide a link to the source where you learned about Ethiopia's history. Also, discuss and link to 2 articles dealing with efforts to eradicate poverty in Ethiopia. Finally, check the directions to make sure your final reflection is also included in this post.

  3. Not silly at all. I want to be able to give you full credit on this for the final -- 100%. What it still misses is a discussion of current efforts to end poverty in Ethiopia. You expanded the basic historical facts about Ethiopia but it's still missing more specific and current information related to poverty-fighting efforts, so you would lose some significant points for that. Other than that, it's fine.
